On the Naturalness of Things. Maia Stefana Oprea (VR)

20 Apr 2021 - 20 Apr 2045

“Cartesian dualism” in the view of Maia Ștefana Oprea

“[…] These usages represent the key of understanding several current social and economic phenomena, as they have in common the idea of nature as something outside of us. This theory points out to philosophical debates such as the one on Cartesian dualism, manifested through the mind-body dichotomy. In a larger sense, this becomes the dichotomy nature-culture.
Through her artistic practice and through her eco lifestyle, Maia Ștefana Oprea gets to reconcile the nature-culture paradox and proposes, in this selection of works, a return to the moment before the emerging of the two paradigms, causalities, or separate spheres of discourse.
Torsos, vegetative patterns, worlds under microscope and elements of her personal artistic practice, in cyclic evolution, are depicted in her photographs, digital works and paintings, which make us imagine how a certain environment determines the development of a plant, of a being, of a human. In subtle ways, the topic of this exhibition belongs to an ecological trend in contemporary art, as well as to a global movement of raising awareness regarding the impact we, as humans, have on our planet.”
